Topamax and Pregnancy Safety Announcement Released by FDA

The FDA has released a safety announcement regarding Topamax and pregnancy. Reportedly, there is an increased risk of cleft palates and cleft lips in children born to women taking topiramate or the branded drug Topamax during pregnancy. As a result of this information regarding Topamax and pregnancy, the attorneys working with Class Action.org would like to hear from users who experienced this Topamax side effect. If you delivered a child with an oral birth defect after taking Topamax during pregnancy, visit http://www.classaction.org/topamax.html and complete the free case review form to find out if you may be able entitled to financial compensation.

Information from the North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy registry revealed that 1.4% of infants exposed to topiramate during pregnancy developed a cleft lip or palate, compared to .38 to .55% of children exposed to other antiepileptic medications. Children who were not exposed to epilepsy drugs had a much lower risk (.07%) of developing oral birth defects. Due to this information regarding Topamax and pregnancy, the FDA has decided to strengthen topiramate’s warning labels and reclassify the drug to indicate that there is positive evidence of fetal risk based on human research.

Women who delivered children with Topamax birth defects may have legal recourse in light of this information regarding Topamax and pregnancy.
