Ellie Nesler, who killed a man accused of molesting her
son, has died of cancer. Nesler, 56, died of breast cancer Friday morning in a
Sacramento hospital. She had battled the disease since 1994.
Nesler sparked a national debate on vigilantism after
shooting Daniel Driver five times in the head during a break in his preliminary
hearing in 1993. Driver was standing trial for molesting four boys, one of them
Nesler’s son Willy. The shooting became the 1999 TV movie ‘Judgment Day: The
Ellie Nesler Story’ starring
Nesler was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and was
sentenced to 10 years in prison. She only served 3 years of the sentence as she
won an appeal based on jury misconduct.
