Belgium Parties Agree to Deal for New Government

Less than three weeks after Belgium’s Prime Minister Yves Leterme resigned the country’s political parties have struck a deal that will form a new government.

According to the deal Herman Van Rompuy, leader of the Flemish Christian Democrats, will become the new prime minister. He had been the speaker of parliament and following Leterme’s resignation King Albert II had asked him to form a new government.

On Dec. 19 Leterme resigned as prime minister due in large part to a scandal involving his government’s plans to sell its stake in the troubled Fortis bank.
