Jena Six Teen Mychal Bell Accidentally Shoots Self

A teenager who was arrested and charged in the controversial 2006 beating of a white classmate in Jena, Louisiana was in a hospital Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself. Mychal Bell was cleaning a gun when it accidentally discharged, according to his attorney Carol Powell-Lexing.

Bell was shot in the shoulder. He was taken to a hospital in Monroe, Louisiana where he had surgery. The wound it not life threatening.

Bell and five other African American teenagers became known as the ‘Jena 6’ after they beat a white classmate. The beating came after three white students hung a noose in a tree the was ‘off limits’ to black students at Jena High School.

The teens faced adult felony charges. The case drew national attention as many believed the charges were too excessive. Civil rights groups protested the charges.

Bell pleaded guilty to battery in a juvenile court and severed time in a youth home. After being released he moved to Monroe.
