Opposition Leader John Atta Mills Claims Victory in Ghana Elections

Tension is high in Ghana as the results of the recent presidential run-off are being tabulated and opposition leader John Atta Mills has already claimed victory for his National Democratic Congress party.

While Mills has declared victory Nana Akufo-Addo of the ruling New Patriotic Party has said the results were too close to call and would await official results.

Current President John Kufuor, forced to step down after the maximum two-term limit, has appealed for calm as the election committee prepares to deliver the results.

Both sides have accused the other of voter fraud and the results will almost undoubtedly be challenged yet observers have declared the voting to be free and fair and have urged the candidates to accept the outcome.
