Israeli PM Ehud Olmert Says Strikes in Gaza will Continue, Prepared for “Long Weeks of Action”

As Israeli jets continue to pound Gaza for the fourth straight day and the Palestinian casualties top more than 350 the international call for a ceasefire has grown louder yet Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has stated the airstrikes were just the “first of several stages” and that the country was ready for “long weeks of action” according to deputy defense minister Matan Vilnai.

Israel has been targeting Hamas locations within Gaza and have destroyed several key bases, buildings and institutions used by the rebel group but the number of civilian casualties has angered many. On Tuesday morning two young sisters were killed in northern Gaza when an Israeli missile struck near a donkey cart the girls were riding in.

According to the UN at least 62 of Palestinians killed thus far have been women and children.

The airstrikes launched by Israel were in response to a series of rocket and mortar attacks carried out by Hamas in southern Israel. Those attacks came as a six-month ceasefire came to an end between Hamas and Israel

Israel has also massed ground troops along the border of Gaza and are prepared for a ground assault if needed. While officials have said they have no desire to send troops into Gaza they have expressed a commitment to finish Hamas.
