Japan was rocked by a powerful 6.6 magnitude aftershock on Monday – the 1 month anniversary of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that has claimed the lives of more than 13,000 people so far. Monday’s tremor was located about 100 miles from Tokyo.
The earthquake sparked landslides and power outages in Fukushima Prefecture. Multiple landslides were reported in the city of Iwaki. At least 3 houses were buried and up to 7 people are believed to be trapped inside. Power was knocked out to about 220,000 buildings, according to Tohoku Electric Power Company.
Workers were ordered to evacuate the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after the earthquake knocked out power to three of the six reactors. Efforts to cool the reactors were briefly interrupted, but resumed when power was restored about 50 minutes after the earthquake.
