The father of an 11-year-old girl who died on Christmas
Day while trying to walk 10 miles in the snow has been charged with second
degree murder and felony injury to a child.
Robert Aragon was with his daughter Sage and 12-year-old
son Bear when his truck got stuck in the snow in south-central Idaho. The
55-year-old let Sage and Bear walk to their mother’s home 10 miles away. He and
another adult stayed behind to free the truck.
The children set out for their mother JoLeta Jenk’s house
but never arrived. Bear was found at a rest area near highway 75, about 4.5
miles from where he began walking. After walking several miles Sage decided to
turn back. Her body was found covered in snow about 2.7 miles from where she
began walking. She died of hypothermia. Bear was treated for hypothermia and
released from the hospital.
Aragon is being held in a Blaine County jail on $500,000
bond.
