Presidential Term Extend to Six Years in Russia as Dmitry Medvedev Signs New Law

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed into law a measure that will extend the presidential terms from four years to six years. The change won’t take effect until 2012, when Medvedev’s current term ends.

Most believe the term limit extension was done to open the door for current PM Vladimir Putin to return to the presidency. Putin was forced to step down in 2008 after already serving two terms as president but was quickly appointed prime minister by Medvedev who won the presidential election.

The decision to amend the constitution was fast-tracked through parliament and the provincial legislators and upon receiving their approval Medvedev quickly signed it into law.
