Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich Appoints Roland Burris to Senate Seat Vacated by Barack Obama

Embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has appointed former state’s attorney general Roland Burris to the vacated Senate seat left behind by Barack Obama following his presidential election victory.

While Blagojevich had earlier said he would not make a decision on the vacant seat on Tuesday he called it his obligation to the people of Illinois to fill the position. Blagojevich has the authority to make the decision but it remains to be seen if his decision will be respected.

Burris, 71, has served in several state capacities since becoming the first African American to be elected to a statewide office in Illinois when he was elected state comptroller in 1978.

Blagojevich’s appointment drew instant repute from Democrats including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid who declared, “Anyone appointed by Governor Blagojevich cannot be an effective representative of the people of Illinois and ... will not be seated by the Democratic Caucus.”

Blagojevich has been at the center of a corruption case in which the Governor allegedly attempted to sell the vacant Senate seat to the highest bidder. He has also been the subject of several other accusations tied to bribery
