Israel Rejects International Call for Truce in Gaza, PM Declares Conditions Not Right

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said his country would continue its strikes in the Gaza Strip, rejecting an international call for a brief truce to allow humanitarian aid into the war-torn area.

Olmert continued to assert that Israel’s strikes would continue as long as Hamas launched rockets and mortars into southern Israel. While Olmert refused to halt the Israeli attacks he didn’t rule out the possibility if the security of his country’s southern region was intact.

Over the past five days Israel has used airstrikes from jets and helicopters to destroy Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, hitting military institutions, schools, government buildings, tunnels and more. Palestinian officials have said the death toll is now nearing 400 with many civilians among the casualties.

Many in the international community have condemned Israel’s airstrikes and demanded a ceasefire yet Israeli officials have ignored those calls and have massed ground troops along the border in preparation for further attacks.

Israel has already said the airstrikes were just one phase of the planned attack
