Florida Alcohol Treatment

Alcoholism/alcohol dependency statistics

Florida Alcohol TreatmentAlong with drug abuse and addiction, alcoholism poses a serious public health threat in the US today.  The following statistics regarding alcoholism or alcohol dependency should give you an idea as to the seriousness of this issue:

as of 2005, alcohol abuse and dependency cost $220 billion in health costs in the US alone compared to $196 billion for treating cancer and $133 for health costs associated with obesity (the statistics were released in 2006 so those that are released again in 2011 are sure to be higher)

  • 43% of all Americans have a relative who currently is or was at one time an alcoholic
  • 3 million seniors aged 60 or older depend on alcohol to function daily
  • there are nearly 7 million minors here in the US today who have at least one parent that is alcohol dependent
  • nearly 15 million Americans today are battling alcoholism/alcohol dependency
  • individuals that are in good relationship with their spouses or significant other have just over a 9% probability of developing an alcohol dependency problem whereas over 30% who are in less than acceptable relationships turn to alcohol for dealing with relationship issues
  • 40% of all the alcohol dependency cases in the US stem from genetics while the other 60% result from undetermined causes
  • over half a million children in the US today between the ages of 9 and 12 years old are addicted to alcohol

Suffice it to say, these are some frightening statistics and well explains why the number of addiction treatment and recovery centers in the US has grown exponentially in the past two decades.  The same holds true where Florida alcohol treatment and recovery centers are concerned as well.
