In the simplest of terms, detox (short for detoxification) is the medicinal or psychological removal of toxic substances from the body. It can also refer to the withdrawal symptoms that occur once substance abuse ceases and the body begins to return to homeostasis. A number of alternative medicine proponents promote other detox processes such as “diet detoxification”, but there is little evidence that this type of detox exhibits any noticeable health benefits.
Whenever there are discussions regarding any of the Florida detox processes that addiction treatment and recovery centers use, we are typically referring to either alcohol or drug detox, depending on the type of addiction the individual is suffering from. The goal of any detoxification process is the same, namely ridding the body of toxins and any substance residues that may be left behind from the addiction. However, there are a few basic differences to be aware of as follows:
Alcohol detox – the process by which an alcoholic is brought back to a normal lifestyle after being accustomed to continually having alcohol in their bodies. Without medical management, severe alcohol addiction withdrawal symptoms can cause severe health and medical issues or even be fatal. What you want to remember is that alcohol detox is not a treatment for alcohol addiction or dependency.
Drug detox – this type of detox is employed in order to reduce or relieve the withdrawal symptoms that inevitably occur when an addicted individual has been treated for and is recovering from their drug addiction. It is not meant to be a treatment for drug addiction, but it does play a significant as an early step during a long-term treatment and recovery process. In some cases, drug detox is accomplished without the administration of any medications. However, if the addiction has been ongoing for a long period of time and more severe, medicinal supervision will be required.
The Delray Recovery Center offers both alcohol and drug detox programs in order to help addicted individuals completely recover from their addictions so that they can return to their communities and remain substance-free for life. We know that many people are successful at quitting alcohol and drug without the help of a Florida detox center such as ours.
