A United States drone is suspected of killing two American soldiers last week in Afghanistan. Military officials say the deaths of Marine Staff Sgt. Jeremy Smith, 26, and Navy Corpsman Benjamin Rast, 23, may have been caused by friendly fire. The men died Wednesday outside the town of Sangin in Helmand Province. They were part of a unit sent as reinforcements for marines who were under heavy fire from insurgents.
It is believed the marines under fire may have mistaken Staff Sgt. Smith and Corpsman Rast as insurgents and called for a missile to be fired from the drone. The incident is under investigation. "A formal investigation will determine the circumstances that led to the incident," the International Security Assistance Force said in a statement.
