Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl: Houston Cougars Outgun Air Force Falcons

Case Keenum was 22/33 passing for 252 yards and a touchdown and scored on a pair of runs and Bryce Beall collected 135 yards rushing and a TD while adding another 95 yards receiving to lead the Houston Cougars (8-5) past the Air Force Falcons (8-5) 34-28 in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on Wednesday. The bowl win was the first for Houston since 1980.

Houston had things going their way early as they recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff and four plays later Beall was in the endzone following a one-yard run to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead. That lead was short lived though as the Falcons answered with a six-play 77-yard drive that was capped by a 2-yard TD run from Jared Tew to even the score.

Despite the Air Force touchdown the Houston didn’t appear discouraged as they mounted their own drive and Keenum eventually punched it in from a yard out to move in front 14-7. That lead was extended to 17-7 after the Cougars recovered another fumble and settled for a 22-yard field goal from Jordan Mannisto.

Air Force climbed back to within 17-14 early in the second quarter when Tim Jefferson scored on a 5-yard run and Ryan Harrison then evened the score at 17-17 when he hit a 44-yard field goal. The Falcons had a golden opportunity to take their first lead of the game after they recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff but the Cougars defense came up big with a sack and a tackle for a loss and Harrison’s 55-yard field goal attempt was no good, leaving the score tied at the half.

The Cougars then took their opening possession of the third quarter and went 69 yards in seven plays as Kennum scored his second TD of the game on a 4-yard run. Air Force then chewed up nearly nine minutes as they worked their way down to the Houston 19-yard-line but had to settle for another Harrison field goal to pull to within 24-20.

Houston managed to move in front 31-20 early in the final frame when Keenum hit Andre Kohn on a 13-yard touchdown pass but the Falcons climbed back when Tew scored on a 2-yard keeper and then a two-point conversion put the score at 31-28. The Cougars got another field goal from Mannisto to extend their lead to six and then the defense forced the Falcons to turn the ball over on downs to end the game.
