Senior Hamas Leader Killed in Israeli Airstrike

A senior Hamas leader who had urged followers to carry out suicide attacks against Israel has been killed in an airstrike as the Israelis enter a sixth day of military action in the Gaza Strip.

News of Nizar Rayyan’s death was reported by Hamas, making him the highest ranked Hamas figure to be killed in nearly five years.

The strikes, which began last Saturday, were launched in response to the continued rocket attacks conducted by Hamas into southern Israel. Since the initial day of airstrikes Israel has consistently targeted Hamas positions within Gaza, taking out military buildings, institutions, the Islamic University, smuggling tunnels and more.

Palestinian officials have said more than 400 people have died in the airstrikes and that nearly a quarter of those were civilians.

Both Israel and Hamas have ignored calls for a ceasefire, each side declaring they would fight as long as necessary.
