Outback Bowl Scores: Iowa Hawkeyes Crush South Carolina Gamecocks in Tampa

Shonn Greene rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns, Richard Stanzi was 13/19 passing for 148 yards and a TD and the Iowa Hawkeyes (9-4) defense forced five turnovers in a 31-10 blowout of the South Carolina Gamecocks (7-6) at the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida on New Year’s Day.

The Hawkeyes jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Stanzi hit Trey Stross on a 6-yard touchdown pass and after a South Carolina interception Greene made it 14-0 in the when he scored on a one-yard run. Iowa had a shot at tacking on another three points after the Gamecocks fumbled on their second possession but Daniel Murray’s 45-yard field goal failed to split the uprights.

South Carolina’s offense continued to struggle as their third possession of the game resulted in yet another turnover and the Hawkeyes pushed their advantage to 21-0 on Greene’s second one-yard touchdown. The Gamecocks turned the ball over for the fourth straight possession but Iowa returned the favor and the score remained 21-0 at the break.

The Gamecocks third quarter didn’t start any better as they once again turned the ball over, their fifth of the game, and the Hawkeyes turned it into three points as Murray’s 18-yard field goal pushed the lead to 24-0. South Carolina then missed a 51-yard field goal and Iowa turned to Greene who scored on an 11-yard run to carry a 31-0 advantage into the final frame.

Chris Smelley finally put the Gamecocks on the board with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jared Cook and Ryan Succop added a 48-yard field goal later in the frame but the game has already been decided by that point.
