Capital One Bowl Scores: Georgia Bulldogs Use Second Half Push to Drop Michigan State Spartans

Matt Stafford was 21/30 passing for 250 yards and three touchdowns, Knowshon Moreno collected 62 yards on the ground and another 63 yards receiving and a TD and the Georgia Bulldogs (10-3) defense collected seven sacks and limited the Michigan State Spartans (9-4) offense to 236 total yards in a 24-12 victory at the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Florida on New Year’s Day.

The Bulldogs grabbed a 3-0 first quarter lead on a Blair Walsh 32-yard field goal but Michigan State managed to even the score at 3-3 after picking off Stafford and settling for a 20-yard field goal from Brett Swenson.

Swenson gave the Spartans a 6-3 lead late in the second quarter on a 32-yard field goal and the score would remain 6-3 at the break.

Georgia finally got their offense going late in the third quarter as Stafford led the Bulldogs on a 96-yard drive that was capped by a 35-yard TD toss to Michael Moore for a 10-6 advantage. After a Michigan State punt that was returned 38 yards by Prince Miller and a 15-yard personal foul the Bulldogs were in great position to strike again and Stafford found Aron White on a 21-yard TD pass to give Georgia some breathing room at 17-6.

That lead held into the final frame but Javon Ringer brought the Spartans back into the game with a one-yard touchdown run to close the gap to 17-12 but their two-point attempt failed. The Bulldogs responded quickly as Stafford continued his second half surge with a 21-yard TD pass to Moreno to push the score to 24-12 with 3:43 left in the game.

Georgia’s defense then forced the Spartans to turn the ball over on downs and Georgia managed to eat away at the clock to seal the game.
