Quentin Castille rushed for 125 yards on 18 carries, Joe Ganz threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns and Todd Peterson had 96 yards receiving and a TD on four receptions as the Nebraska Cornhuskers (9-4) overcame a 21-10 deficit in the second half to beat the Clemson Tigers (7-6) 26-21 at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida on New Year’s Day.
After a scoreless first quarter the Tigers used their defense to put the first points of the game on the board as DeAndre McDaniel collected a Ganz fumble and went 28-yards for a touchdown to give Clemson a 7-0 lead. Nebraska answered with a 48-yard field goal from Alex Henery with 1:10 left in the half to cut their deficit to 7-3 and they were in great position to add another score after Clemson QB Cullen Harper was picked off at their 27-yard line. The Cornhuskers quickly returned the favor as Ganz was picked off on first down and Crezdon Butler returned it 59 yards down to the Nebraska 13-yard line with 54 seconds left on the clock. Harper was sacked on first down but then hit Aaron Kelly on a 25-yard touchdown pass and the Tigers carried a 14-3 lead into the half.
Nebraska came out in the third quarter and found the endzone on their opening possession when Ganz hit Nate Swift on a 17-yard touchdown pass to cut the Cornhuskers deficit to 14-10 but the Tigers responded on their first drive of the second half as Harper hit Jacoby Ford on a 41-yard touchdown pass to push the cushion back to 11-points.
Following the Tigers quick strike Ganz answered for the Cornhuskers as he found Peterson on a 19-yard touchdown toss and after a Harper interception Nebraska climbed to within 21-20 as Henery hit a 28-yard field goal. Nebraska’s defense then forced a four and out and Henery connected on another 28-yard field goal and the Cornhuskers had their first lead at 23-21 heading into the fourth.
Both defenses stepped it up in the final frame but Henery managed to boot his fourth field goal of the game, a 22-yarder, to push the Cornhuskers advantage to 26-21 with 5:20 left in the game. Clemson managed to drive down to the Nebraska 10-yard line and were starring at a first and goal with just under two minutes but after an incomplete pass Harper was sacked back at the 26-yard line and two incomplete passes followed to turn the ball over. Nebraska then took a knee to seal the game.
