Texas Police Force Fights Prescription Abuse with Drug Take-Back Initiative

The Plano, Texas police department is participating in a national program known as "National Take-back Day," which is designed to remove unused prescriptions from the homes of Texas citizens.  Residents are able to voluntarily give their medications to Texas law enforcement officials for destruction.

Prescription drugs are one of the most commonly abused types of drugs in Texas, particularly with youth.  One of the reasons for this is that they are so widely available.  The average American home's medicine cabinet has several prescription drugs that can be abused.

As long as these medications remain unused in medicine cabinets, the homeowner is at risk of some loved one getting into the pills.  What is more, break-ins and theft of prescription medications are becoming a more and more common occurrence.

While gun safety was an issue many decades ago, prescription medication safety is the new issue now.

Many Texas drug rehabs will attest to the fact that prescription drug abuse brings more people to their doors than many other street drugs combined.
