David Jason signs up for first comedy in 20 years

Sir David Jason is to star in a new comedy playing a bodyguard of the royal family.

It will be the 'Touch of Frost' actor's first comedic role since he appeared in 'Only Fools and Horses' 20 years ago.

In the BBC1 programme - entitled 'The Royal Bodyguard' - the 71-year-old star will take on the main role of Captain Guy Hubble, a lifelong soldier nearing retirement who is mistakenly appointed as head of royal security.

Hilarity ensues as the hapless captain has to oversee security arrangements every time a member of the royal family makes a public engagement.

David said he was happy to embark on his first comedic role since playing the much-loved Derek 'Del Boy' Trotter and is particularly thrilled to be working with Jimmy Mulville, who is producing the show.

He said: "I am really looking forward to working with the very talented producer Jimmy Mulville, and working on a great comedy project with the BBC. It will be good to have a laugh again!"

BBC1 controller Danny Cohen said: "I am absolutely delighted to welcome David Jason back to a leading comedy role on BBC One. David is a hugely talented performer and much loved by British viewers.

"When I read the script I knew he would be perfect for this role."

'The Royal Bodyguard' is being written by Mark Bussell and Justin Sbresni and was commissioned from Hat Trick Productions.
