Coronation Street drama wins prestigious US prize

A drama about 'Coronation Street' has won a Gold World Medal at the New York Festivals International Television and Film Awards.

'The Road to Coronation Street', which marked the 50th anniversary of the acclaimed ITV soap and was aired last year on BBC Four, won the prize at the annual event in Las Vegas last night (12.04.11).

The project - starring 'EastEnders' star Jessie Wallace and James Roache - told the tale of show creator Tony Warren battling to get the soap on the air in 1960.

It is the second accolade the drama - scripted by Daran Little and directed by Charles Sturridge - has won, as it recently picked up the Best Single Drama prize at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards.

The New York Festivals International Television and Film Awards celebrate the best in television programming worldwide, with 65 countries showcasing content.

Two grand trophies were given at the event - ESPN from the US picked up one for Broadcaster of the Year while The Edge Picture Company from the UK was named Production Company of the Year.
