Rose Bowl Scores: USC Trojans Use Big Second Quarter to Knock Off Penn State Nittany Lions

Mark Sanchez was 28/35 passing for 413 yards and four touchdowns, Damian Williams had ten catches for 162 yards and a TD and Stafon Johnson added 63 yards rushing to lead the USC Trojans (12-1) to an impressive 38-24 victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions (11-2) at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California on New Year’s day.

Sanchez set a USC record for passing yards in the Rose Bowl and his 27-yard touchdown pass to Williams in the opening quarter gave the Trojans a 7-0 lead but the Nittany Lions responded with a 9-yard touchdown run from Daryll Clark on a keeper to even the score at 7-7 heading into the second.

Sanchez then used his legs to put the Trojans back in front as he scored on a 6-yard run and then David Buehler kicked a 30-yard field goal to extend the advantage to 17-7. With 1:24 left in the half Sanchez found Ronald Johnson on a 19-yard touchdown and after a Penn State fumble the Trojans took a 31-7 lead when Sanchez hit C.J. Gable on a 20-yard TD with 36 seconds left in the half.

After a scoreless third quarter the Nittany Lions got back on the board when Clark found Derrick Williams on a 2-yard touchdown toss to cut the deficit to 31-14 but the Trojans responded with a touchdown drive of their own as Sanchez hooked up with Ronald Johnson on a 45-yard score to extend the lead to 38-14.

Penn State then drove 75 yards but had to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Kevin Kelly. The Nittany Lions then got the ball back and Clark pulled Penn State to within 38-24 when he found Jordan Norwood on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 4:24 left in the game but the Trojans offense manage dto eat away enough of the clock to preserve the win.
