Suicide Attack Targeting Afghan Tribal Elders Leaves 10 Dead

A suicide attack targeting tribal elders in northeast Afghanistan on Wednesday left 10 people dead and at least 7 others wounded. The attack occurred at a meeting attended by local elders in the Asmar district of Kunar province. Authorities say Haji Malik Zarin, a pro-government tribal elder and an ally of President Karzai, was among the dead.

"The suicide attacker approached them (the elders), hugged Malik Zarin and then detonated the explosives strapped to his body," said district police chief Mohammad Shoaib.

Zarin’s son and another family member were also killed. At least three children were among the dead.

Meanwhile, a suicide bombing in Kapisa province on Wednesday wounded four civilians. According to authorities, the bomber’s explosives detonated before he reached an unknown target in Nijrab district. The blast occurred in the Chokan Baz bazaar.
