The Partnership at Drugfree.org, in conjunction with the MetLife Foundation, released a study that shows that many teens possess an apathetic attitude towards substance abuse.
Among the 2,500 teens who participated in the survey, 45 percent did not see a big risk in daily drinking. In addition, less than 31 percent strongly disapproved of their friends getting drunk, and 73 percent said that they have friends who consume alcohol at least once a week.
The study also offered insight into Ecstasy use, citing an increase among teens of up to 10 percent and an increase of marijuana use of up to 39 percent.
The study also showed that 35 percent of teens surveyed had taken a drink within the month preceding the study. In addition, the average age of teens taking a real drink of alcohol (not just a sip or taste) was 14.
“Many presumed that teens were a bit more concerned about alcohol use,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “That’s clearly not the case. Obviously, the 2,500 teens surveyed aren’t completely representative of teens across the nation; however it is still disturbing to see such a high percentage in a cross-section whose attitude is so apathetic. Parents and professionals must ramp up the efforts and educate on the dangers of underage drinking.”
