Whoopi Goldberg never loved husbands

Whoopi Goldberg never loved any of her husbands.

The 'Sister Act' comedian and actress has been married three times – to Alvin Martin from 1973 to 1979, David Claessen from 1986 to 1988 and Lyle Trachtenberg for a year between 1994 and 1995 – but admitted she only wed because she "wanted to feel normal".

Speaking on TV show 'Piers Morgan Tonight' Whoopi said: "I suppose that, you know, you have to actually be in love with the person that you marry.

"You have to really be committed to them. And I'm just - I don't have that commitment.

"I wanted to feel normal. And it seemed to me that if I was married, I'd have a much normal life. But clearly, that's not the case.

"I'm committed to my family, you know, and so that relationship has lasted, you know, the longest."

The 'Girl, Interrupted' star added she had been in love once, with a man who wasn't famous, and while things didn't' work out between them, they remain close friends, although he is married to someone else.

Whoopi, 55, also said her greatest regret is never going to a birthday party for singer Sammy Davis Jr. shortly before he passed away in 1990 from throat cancer.

She said: "I was young and dumb - and he passed like a couple of weeks later. And it devastated me because I thought; you know what, that's what you get.

"I just remember that he had been so good to me. And we were really good friends. I should have gone."

Whoopi's interview will be shown later today (13.04.11) on 'Piers Morgan Tonight' in the US.
