Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa Declares Tamil Tigers Stronghold Seized

Sri Lanka’s pledge to finally rid themselves of the Tamil Tigers has taken a major step forward as President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced the rebel’s de facto capital of Kilinochchi has been seized by government troops.

The northern town of Kilinochchi had been a rebel stronghold for more than a decade as they’ve fought with the government in an attempt to establish an independent state for the Tamil minority.

While the Tamil Tigers acknowledged that the town had been seized they have claimed the military forces took a virtual ghost town as they had already left the area. The Sri Lankan military gave a different account as they said they encountered rebel fighters and engaged in heavy fire before taking Kilinochchi.
