Belgium Parliament Provides New PM Herman Van Rompuy with Vote of Confidence

In a move that should instill some stability to a newly formed government Belgium’s parliament provided a vote of confidence for Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy whose appointment on Wednesday followed the resignation of Yves Leterme on Dec. 19.

While Van Rompuy and his government will have its work cut out for them parliament voted 88 to 45 in favor of the new body. Van Rompuy has already said his first priority would be to dig Belgium out of the economic crisis, a major factor in the collapse of Leterme’s failures.

Van Rompuy now heads the five-party coalition that governed under Leterme but he has promised to tackle the problems of the country in a much more open manner than the previous administration.

Leterme’s resignation came in large part to the government’s attempt to sell its stake in the troubled Fortis bank, a move that was blocked by a judge. It was later determined by the court that the government tried to manipulate the court’s decision and this led to more problems for Leterme and eventually his resignation submission.
