Mexico’s attorney general announced Wednesday the arrests of 16 municipal police officers in connection with mass graves found in San Fernando last week. Authorities say the graves contain the bodies of victims of the Zetas drug cartel. As of Wednesday, 122 bodies had been recovered. Attorney General Marisela Morales said the police officers in custody are accused of helping cover up the killings.
"The government promises ... to get to the bottom of these regrettable and deplorable events and put an end to police corruption," Morales said in a statement.
Authorities have arrested 17 Zetas members who participated in the executions. A $1.2 million reward is being offered for information leading to the arrests of local Zetas leaders.
