Brian Johnson was 27/41 passing for 336 yards and three touchdowns, Freddie Brown had 125 yards receiving on a dozen receptions, Bradon Godfrey had 75 yards receiving and a TD and the Utah Utes (13-0) defense collected eight sacks and two interceptions in a shocking 31-17 victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide (12-2) at the Sugar Bowl on Friday night.
Utah jumped on the Crimson Tide in the opening frame as Johnson hit Brent Casteel on a 7-yard touchdown pass for a quick 7-0 lead. Less than three minutes later that lead was extended to 14-0 when Matt Asiata scored on a 2-yard run and when Johnson found Godfrey on an 18-yard TD pass the utes were up 21-0 and Alabama was stunned.
The Crimson Tide put their first points of the game on the board in the second quarter when Leigh Tiffin on a 52-yard field goal and Javier Arenas cut the Tide deficit to 21-10 when he returned a punt 73-yards for a score.
Alabama climbed right back into the game early in the third quarter when Glen Coffee entered the endzone on a 4-yard touchdown pass from John Parker Wilson to get to within 21-17 but Utah responded with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to David Reed to push the advantage to 28-17.
Utah clung to the 11-point lead until late in the fourth and Louie Sakoda put the game away when he connected on a 28-yard field goal and Alabama had no answer.
The Utes defense could do no wrong on Friday as they sacked John Parker Wilson eight times, forced three turnovers and limited the Crimson Tide offense to just 208 yards, 31 of those yards on the ground.
