Cyclist Treks across Europe for Mesothelioma Research

By: Daun Lee

Jaime Menzies, 22, is a young man who plans to cycle across Europe to raise money for the hospital that is treating his father for mesothelioma. John Mezies was diagnosed with the aggressive asbestos-related cancer in November 2010 and is being treated at Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire, England. Jaime will begin his journey in Cambridgeshire and cycle to Geneva, Switzerland then back again. He is doing this to raise money for the hospital so they can continue to conduct research on mesothelioma. He will ride his bike for approximately 60 miles a day; his trek begins on June 8th.

Mesothelioma is an incurable cancer that attacks the thin lining of the lungs; it can also affect the lining of the abdomen and heart. Prolonged exposure to asbestos either through working with the mineral or by washing the clothes of people who have been in contact, can cause the fatal cancer. England has socialized medicine so the people who contract mesothelioma don’t have to spend all their money for treatment. However patients in America often spend their life savings for treatment unless they employ mesothelioma attorney to gain compensation.

Both the UK and the US banned the use of asbestos but it is still present in many structures including buildings, ship and oil refineries. Mesothelioma patients are still being diagnosed and can file lawsuits against the companies that used asbestos with the aid of mesothelioma lawyers. Though their pain won’t be diminished by hiring a mesothelioma attorney, they can have comfort in the fact that they will be cared for financially.
