John Atta Mills Declared Winner in Ghana Presidential Election

Opposition leader John Atta Mills of the National Democratic Congress has been declared the winner of Ghana’s presidential election, defeating Nana Akufo-Addo of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

Mills narrowly defeated Akufo-Addo 50.23% to 49.77% after the final vote was held in the Tain constituency. The close victory could be problematic though as the New Patriotic Party had boycotted the Tain vote and they have already said they would challenge the result.

While both sides had accused the other of voter-rigging the election commission declared they found no evidence of the claims and validated the victory of Mills.

Mills will now succeed outgoing President John Kufuor who has served the maximum two-term limit. Kufuor has appealed for order from both sides and urged them to respect the election commissions ruling.

John Atta Mills is expected to be sworn in on Wednesday. He has pledged to work for all of Ghana and maintain its reputation as one of Africa’s shining examples of democracy.

Despite the New Patriotic Party’s plans to contest the results in court Akufo-Addo did congratulate Mills on his victory.
