Israel Steps Up Offensive in Gaza as Artillery and Tank Fire Added to Continued Airstrikes

As Israel enters a second week of attacks on the Gaza Strip the military forces have added artillery and tank fire to an already devastating aerial assault that has left the region smoldering and more than 400 Palestinians dead.

Israel had been using airstrikes to take out Hamas targets in Gaza, leveling buildings, institutions and strategic tunnel systems but on Saturday they began using firepower from the ground with tanks and artillery.

Despite pleas from the international community for a ceasefire Israel and Hamas have vowed to continue their strikes. Israel has vowed to level Hamas after the Islamic militant group refused to end rocket attacks while Hamas leaders have said they will destroy Israel if they attempt a ground assault.

That ground assault appears more likely as Israeli troops continue to mount along the border. Israel has already warned that the airstrikes, carried out over the first seven days of attacks, were just one phase of their operation.

After a six-month ceasefire ended the two sides have exploded in violence with Israel pointing the finger at Hamas for continued rocket attacks launched into southern Israel.
