One day after Cuba marked 50 years of communist rule President Raul Castro has said he would be willing to hold direct talks with the United States. While Castro expressed willingness to talk he assured Cubans the talk would not be rooted in desperation.
The United States instituted an embargo against its southern neighbor four years after Fidel Castro, 82, led a communist revolution in the island. From that point on the two have been at odds with the U.S. has a lunched several unsuccessful attempts at ending Castro’s communist rule.
In 2008 Fidel Castro turned control over to Raul, 76, following health issues that have kept him from the public eye for more than two years.
Speaking during a radio address Raul noted that the election of Barack Obama was a sign of hope and that when he took the presidential office on January 20 he could “do a great deal, could take positive steps.”
Obama has expressed a willingness to speak with Cuba about easing the trade embargo.
