Purdue Pharma’s brand name for single ingredient, time released oral medication is oxycontin. Oxycontin is more formally referred to as oxycodone HCL in medical circles. It is an opiate-based painkiller or analgesic that is derived from morphine and is a codeine related narcotic as well. Oxycodone is an extremely addictive substance and shows a high risk for abuse. As of 2009, the DEA now considers oxycontin to be one of the primary drug threats in the US today.
Additionally, the National Health Institute views it as a serious public health threat due to the fact that there are hundreds if not thousands of reported cases every year regarding serious illnesses and death due to overdose that is associated with oxycodone abuse. As a result of this, many addiction treatment and recovery centers in the US today now provide their clients with some type of oxycontin drug rehab program. Alternative and traditional facilities alike now offer these programs.
One of the most significant problems with oxycontin abuse is that tolerance to the drug can build up rapidly so that the addicted individual needs more and more of it to achieve the desired effect or “high.” As was mentioned above, there are literally thousands of reported cases regarding abuse, overdose, and even death that are associated with oxycontin. Needless to say, not only is it a major drug threat in the US today, it is now considered to be a primary public health threat as well. And at Delray Recovery Center, we realize that.
Oxycodone HCL/oxycontin directly affects the central nervous system as a depressant by creating a euphoric state. It does this by suppressing any pain and relaxing the individual who is taking it. Eventually, it enables the individual to cope with their pain and fall asleep. Sadly, many individuals today have gotten addicted to this side effect and continued to take it recreationally even though their physician feels that they can stop taking it. It is also taken for the purposes of avoiding withdrawal symptoms associated with heroin use.
With the growth of the drug’s popularity for recreational use, the number of reported cases of abuse and addiction has grown in conjunction with that popularity. As a result, the number of oxycontin drug rehab clients has grown in numbers at Delray Recovery Center,
The problem for the individual, who is reaching out for help with their addiction is that as no two individuals are alike nor do they have similar addictions, withdrawal symptoms or issues that led to the addiction. Thus, each one needs a customized rehab program like the ones we do at Delray Recovery Center for each individuals.
