The NFL playoffs kickoff on Saturday and the AFC will be pitting a pair of teams that have already played each other once this year but today’s game has a bit more weight behind it as the winner will advance to the next round while the loser goes home. The Indianapolis Colts (12-4) managed to beat the San Diego Chargers (8-8) 23-20 in Week 12 when Adam Vinatieri connected on a 51-yard field goal as time expired.
For the Colts the victory over the Chargers, at San Diego, was game four of their current nine-game winning streak and put them back in the chase for a playoff spot after a rough 3-4 start to the year. On the other end, the loss dropped the Chargers to 4-7 and looked to be a nail in their coffin but all was not over.
Despite having four more wins than the Chargers the Colts will be on the road Saturday as a result of San Diego winning the AFC West. Usually a home game would prove advantageous but the Colts posted a 6-2 mark on the road this year including wins over the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers, both playoff clubs. The Chargers were 5-3 at home and none of those victories were against playoff teams.
Indianapolis is led by quarterback Peyton Manning who collected his third NFL MVP award, tying Brett Favre for the all-time mark. Manning has bounced back from a rough early season when he was still recovering from an offseason injury but has hit his stride and he has plenty of weapons around him. That could be bad news for the Chargers who rank last in the league against the pass. Indy can also establish a running game with the balanced attack of Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes who have combined for more than 1,000 yards and 11 TDs on the ground.
Of course the Chargers have LaDainian Tomlinson in the backfield but that could be negated by a torn tendon injury that could sideline him for the game. At present Tomlinson is a game-time decision and that could put added pressure on Darren Sproles as the featured back. Of course Sproles was a major contributor to the Chargers victory over the Denver Broncos in the regular season finale with 115 yards rushing and a TD.
The weight of the world could be on San Diego’s QB Philip Rivers who will be looking to Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates to move the ball down the field. Gates remains questionable for Saturday’s game. Rivers finished the season with the NFL’s highest QB rating at 105.5 but if the Chargers can’t establish a running game they could be in serious trouble as the Colts ranked #6 in passing defense.
Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
