Israeli Ground Troops Enter Gaza Strip

One week after Israel launched massive airstrikes in Gaza officials have confirmed that ground troops have now entered the war-torn area signaling a new phase to their offensive.

More than 700 bombs have been dropped on Hamas targets within the Gaza Strip, leveling buildings, institutions and strategic tunnel systems used by the Palestinian militants. Throughout the airstrikes Israel mounted ground troops along the border, leading many to believe a ground assault was imminent and late Saturday those troops crossed into Gaza.

Israeli officials have said the intention of those ground troops was to secure areas in which Hamas had been using to launch rocket attacks into southern Israel.

More than 400 Palestinians have been killed in the strikes with at least a quarter of those casualties being civilians. Hamas had earlier warned that if Israel sent ground troops into Gaza they would retaliate with devastating attacks.

While the international community has called for a ceasefire both sides have pledged to carry out their offensives until their mission was accomplished. For Israel that means an end to Hamas while Hamas, which does not recognize Israel as a state, has called for the destruction of Israel in favor of a Palestinian Islamic state.
