NFC Playoff Scores: Arizona Cardinals Shut Down Atlanta Falcons to Move On
Kurt Warner was 19/32 passing for 2171 yards and two touchdowns, Larry Fitzgerald had 101 yards receiving and a TD and the Arizona Cardinals defense forced three turnovers and held the Atlanta Falcons running game to just 60 yards in a30-24 victory in the wildcard round of the NFC playoffs.
The Cardinals capitalized on a Matt Ryan interception in the first quarter when Warner hit Fitzgerald on a 42-yard touchdown pass for a quick 7-0 lead.
Atlanta finally got on the board in the second quarter when Jason Elam hit a 30-yard field goal but Warner answered with a 71-yard touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin and the Cardinals had a commanding 14-3 lead. The Falcons got their offense going late in the frame and Michael Turner brought Atlanta to within 14-10 when he scored on an 8-yard run and after a Warner interception the Falcons took the lead 17-14 when Ryan found Justin Peelle on a 2-yard toss just before the half.
The second half started in a disastrous fashion for the Falcons as a fumble on the opening possession was recovered by Antrel Rolle who went 27-yards for the touchdown and Arizona was in front 21-17. Arizona extended their lead to 28-17 late in the third when Tim Hightower scored on a 4-yard run and they had Atlanta in trouble.
Early in the fourth quarter the Cardinals wrapped up Matt Ryan in the endzone for a safety to move up 30-17 but the Falcons climbed back into the game when Ryan hit Roddy White on a 5-yard touchdown pass to get to within 30-24 with 4:19 remaining. It looked like Atlanta was in great position to get the ball back around the two-minute mark but their defense fell apart on a 3rd and 16 and Warner managed to convert on the down and Arizona took a knee from there.
Arizona will either play the Carolina Panthers or New York Giants next week depending on who wins the Minnesota Vikings Philadelphia Eagles matchup.
