Israeli Ground Forces Push Deeper into Gaza, Vow to “Crush Terror”

Israeli ground forces have continued to push deeper into the Gaza Strip and casualties among Palestinian and Israeli troops have begun to mount.

For a week straight Israel bombarded Gaza with airstrikes aimed at destroying key Hamas positions but on Saturday they began moving ground troops across the border to secure areas used by the Islamic militants to launch rocket attacks into southern Israel.

The airstrikes have killed more than 400 Palestinians with an estimated quarter of those casualties being civilians.

Led by tanks, Israeli troops have surged into northern Gaza and engaged Hamas forces and both sides have reported casualties. Despite the increased intensity in fighting neither side is willing to scale down their operations as Israeli President Shimon Peres has vowed to “crush terror.”

Peres was referring to Hamas and their continued practice of launching rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel. He said any thought of a ceasefire was premature noting, “We shall not accept the idea that Hamas will continue to fire and we shall declare a ceasefire.”
