African Union Pledges to Fill Defensive Void in Somalia Following Ethiopian Troop Pullout

The African Union has said they would fill the defensive void in Somalia now that Ethiopian troops have begun to pull out of the country after two years.

Ethiopia has been in Somalia for the past few years to assist in holding off Islamic militants from taking over the government in Mogadishu. Somalia’s government has said Ethiopia’s troop withdrawal would allow them to gain a firmer hold on the country but has left many concerned about potential violence.

Uganda and Burundi currently supply the peacekeepers in Somalia but they have appealed to the AU for reinforcements.

Islamic groups currently hold much of southern Somalia as the government maintains control of parts of the capital city Mogadishu and Baidoa.
