“Willie” the White House Cat Dies at 18

The White House’s first-cat, an American Shorthair that went by the name Willie and India, died on Sunday at the age of 18.

Laura Bush’s press secretary Sally McDonough released a statement acknowledging the cat’s death saying “The President, Mrs. Bush, Barbara, and Jenna are deeply saddened by the passing of their cat India (“Willie”).”

According to the statement the cat died on Sunday at the White House. George Bush’s daughter Barbara named the cat India after former Texas Ranger baseball player Ruben Sierra who went by the nickname “El Indio.”
