The
United States has officially opened its new embassy building in Baghdad as
Marines raised the American flag over the building situated on 104 acres inside
the Green Zone.
At
a price tag of more than $700 million the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad is now the nation’s
largest in the world and has enough space for more than 1,000 workers.
Ryan
Crocker, the U.S. ambassador in Iraq recognized the opening as “a new era for
Iraq and United States relations.” That new era comes on the heels of the U.S.
handing over responsibility for the Green Zone to Iraqi troops.
According
to U.S. embassy spokeswoman Susan Ziadeh the new embassy in Baghdad will have
about 1,200 employees that include diplomats, servicemen and individuals from
14 federal agencies.
