Record Setting Marathon Runner Grete Waitz Dies

Record setting marathon runner Grete Waitz has died after a battle with cancer. The Norwegian Athletics Federation confirms Waitz passed away Tuesday in Oslo at the age of 57.

"Grete Waitz was one of a kind. To me, she was also the greatest athlete we've had in Norwegian history,” said Norwegian Athletics Federation president Svein Arne Hansen.

Among Waitz’s many wins were nine New York City Marathons, two London Marathons, and a silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She set the world record at her first NYC marathon in 1978 with a time of 2 hours, 32 minutes, 30 seconds.

Waitz is survived by her husband Jack.
