A helicopter operated by PHI Inc. crashed shortly after
taking off Sunday, killing eight passengers and injuring one. Federal officials
were expected to arrive at the crash site in Louisiana’s marshlands Monday to
determine the cause of the crash.
The helicopter, which took off from the company’s base in
Amelia, was carrying two pilots and seven passengers when it went down about
100 miles southwest of New Orleans. The passengers have not been identified. The
only survivor is in critical condition at an Ochsner Medical facility.
No other details about the accident were available. PHI
provides helicopters services to oil and gas platforms on the Louisiana coast.
The company also flies medical helicopters.
