Rebel Tutsi Group in DR Congo Ousts Leader Gen. Laurent Nkunda

The main Tutsi rebel group operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo has ousted their leader, General Laurent Nkunda according to senior commanders.

For more than six months the CNDP has been involved in major offensive battles against Congolese militiamen and Rwandan Hutu rebels that have left more than a quarter million people displaced. Nkunda had pledged to continue the fight to protect the minority Tutsi community despite calls for peace.

Nkunda had been frustrated by DR Congo’s continued promises to remove Hutu rebels from the eastern territory, promises that were never fulfilled.

On Sunday CNDP commanders met and deiced to remove Nkunda from his leadership position, declaring he had used poor judgment in his decisions and had distracted the CNDP from carrying out their normal functions.
