No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels were upset at home by Boston College Eagles, 85-78, on Sunday, giving UNC its first loss of the season.
North Carolina (13-1) was down at halftime, 46-40, and never lead in the second half. They shot 29 percent from the field during the game.
BC guard Tyrese Rice led all scorers with 25 points and Rakim Sanders added 22 points and seven steals to help lead the Eagles to the huge upset win. Reggie Jackson came off of the bench to score 17 points. Last season, Rice scored 46 points against the Tar Heels.
Boston College's win catapulted them into the ESPN/USA Today top 25 rankings. Coming into the season, they were selected to finish 11th out of the ACC's 12 teams, while the Tar Heels were selected to repeat as ACC champions after going to the Final Four and winning a school-record 36 games last season.
Tyler Hansbrough, the reigning Naismith Award winner, led UNC with 21 points and nine rebounds. Wayne Ellington added 16 points, while Ty Lawson scored 10 points and dished out four assists.
