Russian
gas giant Gazprom will cut their gas supply shipped through the Ukraine after accusing
the country of siphoning some of the supply following a dispute over a new
contract.
Gazprom
had stopped supplying Ukraine with gas because of an outstanding $1.5 billion
bill and an expired contract. Despite cutting the supply Gazprom continued to send
gas meant for other European countries through pipelines in Ukraine. Those
pipelines provide about one-fifth of the gas needed by the European Union.
The
decision to stop supplying gas to Ukraine on Jan. 1 quickly turned to
accusations of gas siphoning when problems arose with the flow of gas in the pipelines.
Ukraine has denied the accusations but the gas company appears ready to cut
their supplies “by the amount stolen by Ukraine” according to company CEO
Alexei Miller.
