Tim Hetherington, a photojournalist who co-directed the Oscar-nominated Afghan war documentary Restrepo with Sebastian Junger, was killed in Libya on Wednesday. Hetherington and another unidentified journalist reportedly died in the city of Misrata after being hit by an RPG. Hetherington was 40.
CNN reports Hetherington's last Tweet was posted on Tuesday. "In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO,” he wrote.
Hetherington covered social and political issues throughout the world. He is perhaps best known for covering the Second Liberian Civil War. Hetherington gained fame in 2010 for Restrepo, which followed a platoon of American soldiers as they defended an outpost in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley.
