Three months after having sought professional treatment for emotional and physical issues, Demi Lovato is now admitting that she has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
"I never found out until I went into treatment that I was bipolar," Lovato told People Magazine.
"Looking back it makes sense. There were times when I was so manic, I was writing seven songs in one night and I'd be up until 5:30 in the morning."
Lovato, 18, stayed in treatment for three months. During that time, she underwent therapy for bulimia, anorexia, and cutting herself. According to Lovato, she has "battled depression from a very young age."
This revelation about Lovato's bipolar disorder sheds some light on why she was so quick to tweet her support for Catherine Zeta-Jones when she announced recently that she also has bipolar disorder.
Lovato also recently announced that she will be leaving her hit Disney Channel show Sonny With a Chance so that she can focus more on her music career. She also said that leaving the show will help her recovery.
"I feel like I am in control now where my whole life I wasn't in control," said Lovato. "What's important for me now is to help others."
