Studies show that women become alcoholics more quickly than men

Alcoholism affects women faster than men

In recent years, Dr. Shelly Greenfield, a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard and the Director of Clinical and Health Services Research and Education at McLean Psychiatric Hospital, has presented studies which show that women become alcoholics at a faster pace than their male counterparts.

The increased rates of alcoholism are attributed to various factors, including the way the body metabolizes alcohol and the increased estrogen within women's bodies. In addition, women tend to have less water in their bodies and, therefore, alcohol is more concentrated within their bloodstream, producing effects more quickly than men.

“Understanding the physiology of addictions is paramount to conquering them,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “When we are able to understand why certain substances affect a particular group of individuals, we are better able to craft solutions that will help them be better able to live a life free of addictions.”

In addition to the studies’ findings, research also indicates that women develop cirrhosis more quickly than men and are at a higher risk of alcohol related fatalities.
